iPhone 6s First Impressions

At Apple's September 9th event they unveiled the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. The two new flagship smartphones bring updated and new features to Apple's smartphone lineup, including faster processing power, improved graphics performance, 3D Touch, 4K video, and "Live Photos". The design is almost exactly like its predecessor except that it now comes in gold and rose gold anodized aluminum options.

3D Touch on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus Photo - Apple

3D Touch

Arguably the biggest advancement in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus launch is the debut of 3D Touch. This basically takes the Force Touch seen in the Apple Watch a step further allowing multiple degrees of "force" recognition. This allows new shortcuts throughout iOS 9. Pressing a little deeper on some icons and links allows you to "peek" up a preview. Pressing even further allows you to pop directly to that application. You can also pull up a context sensitive shortcut menu directly from app icons on the dashboard by force touching on the icon. The new iPhones also have an embedded Taptic Engine in order to give you feedback when you force touch like on the Apple Watch.

Live Photos

Apple also introduced the concept of "Live Photos". Live Photos allows you to force touch on any photo taken on the new iPhone with Live Photos mode enabled and view a 3 second video clip of what happened before and after the photo was taken. As you scroll through an album of Live Photo enabled photos you'll see a short animation of what happened 1.5s before the photo was taken. This is a pretty cool trick and will help you relive the moments of your photos a little more vividly.

4K video on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus Photo - Apple

4K Video

The new iSight camera on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s plus now take 12MP pictures and shoot 4K videos. The new iMovie in iOS 9 also allows you to edit your videos and upload them to YouTube at 4K resolution. The iPhone 6s is reportedly powerful enough to be able to edit two 4k streams at once to enable effects like picture-in-picture and split screen. The new 12MP iSight camera has a new image signal processor, improved local tone mapping, and optical image stabilization.

A9 Chip

The new A9 chip featured in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus boasts gaming console-class graphics performance. The new A9 chip is said to be up to 70% faster than the previous generation and boosts graphics performance by up to 90% over the previous generation.

Touch ID

The new Touch ID sensors in the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s plus are said to be up to twice as fast as the previous generation.
